Car Show 30457 - "The Jet Age"

Car styling during the late 40's and even more in the early to mid 50's took a lot of cues from jet aircraft. Grills, tail fins, and hood ornaments all subtly or overtly reflected this new form of propulsion, implying speed and "modernity". There is no mistaking the inspiration for this Pontiac hood ornament.

I usually work pretty hard to keep my reflection or shadow out of my images, but that was nearly impossible with all the chrome on the cars at the show.

Car Show Ford T wheel "Sketch" - 30450

A single Model T Ford, made in 1913, was the oldest car at the show. While there are a number of things about it that are interesting, what caught my eye was the spoked wheels and gears attached to the front right hub. If I'm not mistaken the gears are for the speedometer/odometer.

This photograph (Yes, it IS a photograph!) of the wheel and gears made for an interesting image, but I thought it would be a great "sketch". Both this one and the one below were converted to "sketches" using an action obtained at the Action Central website, linked below in the Tumacacori Polaroid Collage image.

Car Show 30483

Spending a few hours at a local car show, the memories of cars of my youth, friends and evn of my own first car started flooding back.
This was my first reall attempt at imaging cars, and the venue was a parking lot in growning housing development, so the scene wasn't very photogenic. The cars, however, were beautiful.

I love the lines of the early '60s Impalas!

Tumacacori Polaroid Collage

Before digital imaging, the only way to have "instant gratification" in photography was to use Polaroid cameras and film. One artistic effect using Polaroids was to take multiple images of a subject and place all of the images together in a collage. When I was young, I always thought this was an interesting technique, but I never did much with it with my own camera as Polaroid film was expensive for a teenager.

Digital imaging and Photoshop allow for this effect to be reproduced with only a few clicks of the mouse. For my first attempt at this I used the image of Tumacacor Mission that was first posted on this blog on January 9th.

All the exposure details are the same, but I used Mike Warren's Polaroid Collage Action found at Action Central - The Photoshop Action Exchange>

The Half Way Point

A shot of the 1.5-m telescope on Mt. Lemmon as is searches the moonlit skies for Near Earth Asteroids. This is my 30,000th image taken with the 20D. Since the shutter is rated for 60,000 exposures and it took me a year to shoot 30,000 images, the shutter should be due for replacement late this year.

Sydney Relaxes

A little atypical for Sydney, she hasn't gotten herself completely under the covers on my bed.
